As we have reached halfway through 2013, we have picked the
best five Malayalam films in the year based on the quality of the films and not
on box-office reports.(The ratings are strictly personal):
5. Annayum Rasoolum: Directed
by the cinematographer Rajeev Ravi , it was one of the most realistic love stories to be made in Malayalam. The lives of the people of Fort Kochi were
shown in the most sensible manner that we would feel we are also one among
them.Through this film Fahad proved what a natural performer he is and was just
living the character of Rasool .Inspite of the complaint that the movie was
leisurely paced it won the state award for Best editing.
4. Amen: Finally Lijo Jose Pellissery got his due through
Amen, a film which was both critically and commercially acclaimed one.Though
the story was an overused one, it’s the fresh treatment with some ‘divine’
comedy that mesmerized everyone and ably supported by all the actors. The main
attractions were the stunning cinematography by Abhinand Ramanujam and infectious music by Prashant Pillai.
Still we believe Lijo’s ‘City of God’ was way better though it bombed at box
office.
3. Mumbai Police: Gripping Investigative thrillers are
rarely seen in Malayalam and Mumbai police directed by Roshan Andrews could be
called the most daring attempts in Malayalam films. Intelligently scripted by
Boby- Sanjay the movie was extremely engaging and thrilling till the very end
and the detailing were just perfect.Kudos to Prithviraj for delivering his best performance and for accepting a role
which might not have been accepeted by other super stars.
2. Shutter: We have placed Shutter at second place in this
list due to its surprisingly novel theme and was also presented with atmost
sincerity by the director Joy Mathew with several twists and moments of
suspense. This movie would be also remembered for its stellar performances from
the actors like Lal, Saitha Madthil, Vinay Fort etc.Though the editing could
have been a little better, this film is a must watch for those who likes
refreshing contents and unadultered portrayal of characters. And it’s a pity
that the movie was ignored by the state award committee for some inferior
films.
1.Left Right Left: The most spectacular movie to be made in Malayalam
in recent years, Left Right Left directed by Arun Kumar Aravind and brilliantly scripted by the genius of
Murali Gopi was a film which blended politics, history and imagination in right
proportions to give an unforgettable cinematic experience. This was also a rare
film in which each actor gave his/her best performance till date especially
Indrajith, Harish Pisharady, Sethulekshmi, Murali Gopi, Lena. Undoubtedly the best
political movie ever made in Malayalam and a movie which will be considered as
a modern day classic when the DVD releases. Don’t miss this cinematic gem.
