Drishyam - Unarguably the movie of the year !!!

There are few films which are considered the defining movies of the year or the decade or the industry as a whole. In mollywood, movies like Chemeen,Elipathaayam,My Dear Kuttichathan,Yavanika,Piravi,Bharatham,Manichitrathazhu, Vanaprastham etc. could be included in this category either due to their novel idea or terrific script or spell bounding performances. And after a long time we got another movie which could be added to this list this year , a movie which has never seen before post release hype and non- stop standing ovation, may be after Manichitrathazhu - Drishyam directed by Jeethu Joseph, one of the finest thrillers ever told in malayalam film industry.

Drishyam could be included in a family thriller genre which is very rare in any film industry. It tells the story of a fourth standard pass husband, tenth class failed wife, their two daughters and the life around them. The film starts of as a normal family movie and as it reaches the end of first half the movie gives a sudden shock to the audience and the second half is completely taken to a different layer in the form of  an edge of the seat thriller which was never seen in malayalam before in which a whole family stand together for a cause and how they face all the challenges in their path intelligently which culminates in an hair rising climatic sequence. The credit goes to the air tight script written by the director himself which is so perfect that you would be forced to glued to the seat without moving your eyelid where you can only clap, clap and clap at the goose bumps created by the climax.Though the initial portions seems to be slow but those portions have to be paced in that manner to make the audience feel that they are part of that family .The succes if the film lies in the sentiments of the audience where they should feel that the actions of the  family are justified and Jeethu Joseph just hit the bulls eye in this case as even families in the theatre were clapping at various scenes in the film where the family was actually doing a crime in normal case.

Technically this film availed what is required to be told for this story without any camera gimmicks or loud background score unlike much hyped thrillers in the recent past. Cinematographer Sujith Vasudev has just done what is just apt for the film using just straight shots and even cranes were used few times only. Also the re recording is so synced with the film that you don't feel that  a bgm is  played there. The editing is just perfect to provide the anxiety and tension in the minds of the viewer which was essential for the film.

On the performance side, every one has given their best for the film. And what to say about the leading man....well he was switched into the 'vintage Lal' mode where he had the opportunity to showcase various emotions with usual easiness and originality and this could be considered one of the best performances of the acting legend and may be the best in a decade.Kalabhavan Shajon is a revelation in this movie where he would have received the curse of every single viewer in the theatre and there lies his success as an actor, his best till date.Meena and the two children did their job as per their requirements. Asha Sarath was seen in a different avatar and Siddique too did a brilliant job.

Overall Drishyam could be easily called the defining movie of the year as well as the most talked about movie of the decade.Jeethu Joseph just mesmarizeed everyone with Memories and he cemented his place as one of the master story tellers in malayalam with Drishyam. He taught so called new gen directors that you don't need over used subject (human trafficking)  or long chase sequences or trembling cameras or loud bgms or huge hypes for their overrated thriller series...you just need a family and a brilliant script to create a spell bounding thriller.  A movie experience which could provide you with the cinematic orgasm rarely seen and a true movie lover would never want to miss that in a theatre. And this one definitely demands for repeat viewing. In a sentence:

Highly recommended !! Don't miss this one !!

Best 5 Malayalam Films of 2013 till July- Half yearly rating

As we have reached halfway through 2013, we have picked the best five Malayalam films in the year based on the quality of the films and not on box-office reports.(The ratings are strictly personal):

5. Annayum Rasoolum:  Directed by the cinematographer Rajeev Ravi , it was one of the most realistic love stories to be made in Malayalam. The lives of the people of Fort Kochi were shown in the most sensible manner that we would feel we are also one among them.Through this film Fahad proved what a natural performer he is and was just living the character of Rasool .Inspite of the complaint that the movie was leisurely paced it won the state award for Best editing.

4. Amen: Finally Lijo Jose Pellissery got his due through Amen, a film which was both critically and commercially acclaimed one.Though the story was an overused one, it’s the fresh treatment with some ‘divine’ comedy that mesmerized everyone and ably supported by all the actors. The main attractions were the stunning cinematography by Abhinand  Ramanujam and infectious music by Prashant Pillai. Still we believe Lijo’s ‘City of God’ was way better though it bombed at box office.

3. Mumbai Police: Gripping Investigative thrillers are rarely seen in Malayalam and Mumbai police directed by Roshan Andrews could be called the most daring attempts in Malayalam films. Intelligently scripted by Boby- Sanjay the movie was extremely engaging and thrilling till the very end and the detailing were just perfect.Kudos to Prithviraj for delivering  his best performance and for accepting a role which might not have been accepeted by other super stars.

2. Shutter: We have placed Shutter at second place in this list due to its surprisingly novel theme and was also presented with atmost sincerity by the director Joy Mathew with several twists and moments of suspense. This movie would be also remembered for its stellar performances from the actors like Lal, Saitha Madthil, Vinay Fort etc.Though the editing could have been a little better, this film is a must watch for those who likes refreshing contents and unadultered portrayal of characters. And it’s a pity that the movie was ignored by the state award committee for some inferior films.

1.Left Right Left: The most spectacular movie to be made in Malayalam in recent years, Left Right Left directed by Arun Kumar Aravind  and brilliantly scripted by the genius of Murali Gopi was a film which blended politics, history and imagination in right proportions to give an unforgettable cinematic experience. This was also a rare film in which each actor gave his/her best performance till date especially Indrajith, Harish Pisharady, Sethulekshmi, Murali Gopi, Lena. Undoubtedly the best political movie ever made in Malayalam and a movie which will be considered as a modern day classic when the DVD releases. Don’t miss this cinematic gem.

Honey Bee review-

One time watchable with ur friends that too if you can bear abuses and vulgar jokes..not recommended with your family !!

Left Right Left- One Hell of A Movie !!

How often do we have the full satisfaction of experiencing a movie? To see something spectacular unfolding in the screen which mesmerizes you with the sheer strength of script and performances?Left Right Left, 3rd film directed by Arun Kumar Aravind and scripted by Murali Gopi gives that f***ing awesome cinematic experience, the hangover of which is difficult to leave you behind even after hours of watching the film. This is definitely going to be the most stunning movie of the year and one of the finest political movies ever made in malayalam.

LRL could be called as a political movie with its effects on various families. It is basically the story of 3 persons with 3 ideologies and life styles but interwoven in certain way and this movie is all about how a newspaper exclusive changes the lives of these 3 people and their families.
Though we have seen numerous political movies, it requires some extraordinary knowledge of politics and history, imagination and conviction to make it something special. And the genius of Murali Gopi has done the impossible with his terrific script and narrative due to which we are able to witness some of the most hair rising scenes in Malayalam. Each and every small character in this movie has a graph which is rare ina commercial film and plays a pivotal role in the movement of this film and even without the presence of a small character this movie is incomplete. As a director Arun Kumar has visualized this script in the most convincing and engaging mannerwhich is definitely notches above his previous stunner Ee Adutha Kalath.

 Performances:
Indrajith as ‘Vattu Jayan’,as a psycho inspector delivers undoubtly his best performance till date. His initial rough and tough nature, his love towards a married nurse was depicted with atmost perfection and his confrontation with her when he realizes that she was just using him for her purposes will surely bring a few tears in your eyes.Harish Pisharady as ‘Kytheri sahadevan’ having resemblance with Pinarayi Vijayan has been a revelation in this film and delivers a stunning performance. The scene where he explains Murali Gopi about his ideologies and policies will definitely give you goosebumbs. Murali Gopi and Lena were just pitch perfect for their roles. And not the least ,the performance by Sethulakshmi who played Indrajith’s mother was simply stunning especially the scene where she narrates about Indrajith to Lena will be remembered for a long time.
Overall Left Right Left  is an exceptional movie from Arun Kumar Kumar with the help of some unbelievable writing of Murali Gopi and extra ordinary performances from the whole cast.Hats off to the makers for their daring attempt and thanking them for providing me a truly mesmerizing cinematic experience after a long time.

Definitely worth every penny spend on it.Must watch!!Highly recommended !!!!!!
